Stella Maris Takes Two Over St. Saviour

Stella Maris High School’s Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball teams traveled into Park Slope on Wednesday, December 3 to take on St. Saviour High School. Both teams came away with decisive victories. The Varsity Lady Flippers improved their record to 3-1 (2-0 League play) and the Junior squad notched their first victory (1-0).

The Varsity Blue and Gold fouled their way to a not-so-pretty first half lead of 26-18. With the Saviour Pandas marching their way to the foul line 19 times the game was very slow moving. Not the up-tempo game that SM favors. The second half started with SM going on a 10-0 spurt as fast break conversions finally started. 20 third quarter points, 16 off fast breaks, put the game well in hand. SM’s 59-35 win was a team effort as 9 members scored and all pitched in on the boards. The team was led by Natalia Alexander (11), Jen Anglero (10), Marybeth Raphael (9) and Natalie DeSanctis (8). Liz Jablonski and Catherine Rudden came off the bench to provide strong offensive support in the fourth quarter (4 pts. and 6 pts.) to hold the Pandas at bay.

Then SM’s Junior squad took the court (most representing SM for the first time ever). Their 71-10 victory was also a total team effort as all 10 players scored. SM came out of the gate on fire. y the end of the first quarter SM led 26-2. Freshman Alexa Rosella set the tone with 12 first quarter points. The tough, tenacious play of fellow frosh Michelle Raaf and MaryEllen Jablonski contributed to the team’s efforts.

Sophomores Maureen Carey and Kara Bobby took over the rebounding efforts in the second quarter. Then in the 3rd Michelle Raaf caught fire as she also scored 12 points. Scoring for the game: Michelle Raaf (18), MaryEllen Jablonski (14), Alexa Rosella (12), Maureen Carey (9), Kara Bobby, Mary Carson and Catherine Warren (4), Caroline Weeks (3) and Elizabeth Murray and Tara Gleason (2).

Flipper Footnotes: As of this writing Marybeth Raphael finds herself 1 assist shy of 300. Games next week are: Monday vs Ford (4/5:45), Tues at Edmund’s and Varsity home vs Mary Louis on Fri at 4:45. Thanks to Mrs. C for the first of three basketballs! MR great choice of dinner selection! Enjoy and Congrats! V we need to go digging!
