New Horizon Center Celebrates Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a family day, but for those living in the many adult homes in the Rockaway area it can be a lonely day. This year, as in years past, clients of New Horizon’s Counseling Center did not have to spend the holiday alone. Instead, they spent it with each other and the center’s counselors.
Besides discussion groups about the importance of the day and other activities, the clients did things that families across the country were doing that day – including viewing the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade on television. At noon the counselors served their ‘guests’ a special Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings.
What made this celebration really special was that, as Flora Bienstock (the program’s Clinical Director) pointed out, New Horizons was the only adult center in the Rockaways open on the holiday. From Thanksgiving to Christmas to New Year’s Day, and all the other special days of the year, the people who run and work at the center lovingly give a part of their holidays to make sure that those who may not have a holiday get one.
New Horizons celebrated sixteen years of serving the people of the Rockaways this past March and is located on Beach 20th Street in Far Rockaway.
