The job of replenishing the erosion along Rockaway’s shoreline began shortly after Thanksgiving. The barge R.S. WEEKS, from Weeks Marine, has been anchored between each 13 and 14 Streets since before the holiday. Over the Thanksgiving weekend full-scale preparation for the replenishment was taking place with several boats working between Beach 9 and Beach 15 Streets, as well as working on the beach.

As reported in the November 21 issue of The Wave, the money for the project comes from $1.25 million in funds that Congressman Anthony Weiner was able to have included in the Energy and Water Appropriations for this year.

This past Saturday, a worker with Weeks Marine told The Wave that the company should be in the Beach 14 area for possibility a week. The whole process should take approximately two months.

With some of the worst erosion coming during the winter, the 1.06 million cubic yards of sand being used in the project will not only be used to repair past erosions, but also to help preserve the shoreline during the upcoming months.
