Obituaries <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2 Final//EN">Plumber Walter Moehlenhoff, who was born in Far Rockaway and lived there until the early 1980s, passed away on November 21. He was 74. Moehlenhoff, a self-employed plumber who served in the army during the Korean War, moved to Woodmere in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (nee Roske); a son, Joseph Moehlenhoff, of Long Beach; a daughter, Linda Moehlenhoff, of Woodmere; grandchildren, Rachel and Paul Moehlenhoff; a sister, Gertrude Costa, of Cedarhurst; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements entrusted with the Meserole Funeral Home where a service, officiated by Rev. Anne Elizabeth Aurand, Pastor of Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, was held. Interment was at the Holy Road Cemetery. William J. Murtagh William J. Murtagh, a Belle Harbor resident for 20 years, passed away on November 21. Murtagh, who was born in Brooklyn, was a parishioner at St. Francis de Sales Church. Murtagh served in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam, and was a member of the American Legion Post 272. At the time of his death, Murtagh was retired from his position as a school psychologist for the New York City Board of Education. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne (nee Carey) Murtagh; sons, Brendan, Liam, and Christopher Murtagh; daughters, Caitlin, and Megan Murtagh; sisters Maryellen and Peggy Murtagh; and a brother, Michael Murtagh. Visitation was held at the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. Interment was at St. John's Cemetery. Jonathan Rhodes Jonathan Rhodes, also known as "Jay Black," a 17-year-old Beach Channel High School Student, died on November 19. Rhodes, who was born in Arverne, is survived by his parents, Selena and Charles Rhodes, Sr.; brothers Chares, Jr. and Christopher; sisters, Fatima, Saliva, Loretta, Christine, and Sherelle. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral arrangements entrusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. A service was held at the Macedonia Baptist Church with interment at Amityville Cemetery. Gladys Verona Llwellyn-Smart Homemaker Gladys Verona Llwellyn-Smart, a Rockaway resident for nearly 20 years, passed away on November 17. She was 92. Llwellyn-Smart, who was born in Barrolie, St. Vincent, West Indies, was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald W. Smart. She is survived by her children, Alfred R. Smart, Vesta O. Hopkinson, Margaret Smart, and Miriam Thomas; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; her daughter by "adoption," Janet Walcott; and other family and friends. Funeral arrangements entrusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. A service was held at the Solid Rock Seventh Day Adventist Church. Interment was at Memorial Cemetery, Tampa, Florida. |
