Awards Handed To Rockaway Bantam Cadets
Local youths attended the awards dinner for the Rockaway Bantam Cadets (11) sponsored by Amity Post 791 of the American Legion. The following kids from the Rockaways received trophies and awards from the Brooklyn Cadets Baseball Club:
Matt Caspi, Sean Kirby, William Trustum, Dominic DeMarco, Vincent Esposito, Stephen Henderson, Chris Scheriff, Anthony Silvery, Gary Thompson, Sean Towey and Eddie Warren.
The Cy Young Awards went to Dom DeMarco and Sean Towey for their outstanding pitching. Also pitching well was Gary Thompson, Stephen Henderson and Matt Caspi. Vincent Esposito won the batting title with the highest batting average and most RBIs. Chris Scheriff won the Most Improved Trophy as his hitting and glove work improved throughout the season. Eddie Warren won the Man agers Trophy Award for being the utility player as he filled any position necessary. Receiving a special Honorary Cadet Award was New York Mets’ third base coach Matt Galante, who also played the Cadets. Galante presented the honorary cadet award to Gary Thompson, who also received the Patrick Russell Memorial Student-Athlete Scholarship.
Stephen Henderson received the Bruce Windorf Memorial Award, which is the Cadet MVP Award. Stephen earned this award over the years with his consistent hitting and fielding.
The Cadets are now entering their 60th year of producing numerous professional ballplayers like Joe Torre, Rico Pettrocelli and Matt Galante to name a few. They’ve also sent many players to the minor leagues and hundreds to play college baseball.
Special thanks must be given to Mr. Jim McElroy, who coached Joe Torre and is still associated with the Cadets organization. Without the dedication of this man, thousands of kids wouldn’t have been able to experience this opportunity. One more thanks have to go Marty Andresen of the Rockaway Little League for the use of the ball fields.
