Jerome Abel, Jr., who was also known as "Barshawn" or "Mann," passed away on November 2. He was 39.
Abel was born in Brooklyn, and lived in Rockaway for about 20 years. He belonged to the Living Rock Christian Center.
Abel is survived by his parents, Jerome and Joyce Abel, and his sister Baby Samantha.
He is survived by his wife, Kim Pierce Abel; sisters Valerie Foster, Danita Abel, Cheryl and Marie Foster; his daughters, Latavia, Brianna; stepdaughter, Theresa; stepmother, Millie Abel; and stepbrother Jeremy, of Baltimore, Maryland.
Funeral arrangements entrusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with a service at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Forrest Park Cemetery, in New Jersey.
Mary Donohue, a Rockaway resident for 23 years, passed away on November 4. She was 49.
Donohue, who battled cancer for most of her adult life, is survived by her husband, Kevin; her children, Kathleen, Christine, Nick, and James; a grandchild, Christian; her sister, Jeri; and nieces and nephews, Tessa, Christopher, and Alexander.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales Church, Beach 129 Street, on Wednesday, November 19, at 9:45 a.m. All are welcome to come.
John Joseph Durkin
Breezy Point Resident
John Joseph Durkin, a Breezy Point resident for nearly 40 years, passed away in Rhinebeck, New York, on November 10.
Durkin, who was born in Scotland, was a parishioner at St. Thomas More Church. He was a retired checker,
belonging to the International Longshoremen's Association.
Durkin is survived by his wife, Caroline (nee Mitchell) Durkin; a nephew, Reverend George Duffy; and a niece, Debra Roarbacke.
RoseMarie Ferranti, a Rockaway Beach resident for nearly 15 years, passed away on November 9.
Ferranti, who was born in Manhattan, was a homemaker and a parishioner at St. Camillus Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Ferranti, and her son, William Jackson.
Ferranti is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Witkowski; a sister, Dorothy Vandenberge; her grandchildren from Biloxi, Mississippi, Michelle and Christopher Jackson, and Brian and Kevin Kushner; great grandchildren, Jack, James, and Kevin Kushner; a son-in-law, Frank Witkowski, and a daughter-in-law, Lourdes Jackson.
Visitation was held at the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. Interment was at St. Raymond's Cemetery.
John M. Gardner, a longtime Rockaway resident, passed away on November 7.
Gardner, who was born in Manhattan, was a parishioner at St. Francis de Sales. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, and later worked as a real estate
He is survived by Noreen Rafferty Gardner; his sons, Brendan and Sean Gardner; a daughter, Therese Gardner; his sisters, Aileen and Cate Gardner, Margaret Griffin, Elizabeth McCarthy, Mary Rita Murray, and Alice Shanahan; his brothers, Edward, Joseph, Peter, and William Gardner.
Visitation was held at the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.
Formerly of Belle Harbor
Josephine Guido, a former resident of Belle Harbor, passed away on October 21, in Florida.
Guido was an active officer and board member of the Philip Port Memorial Unit of the American Cancer Society.
She is survived by her two sons and two daughters, and their families.
Longtime Channel Resident
Muriel "Jimmy" Kelly, a Broad Channel resident for 85 years, died suddenly on October 27.
Kelly was an active member of the Golden Age Club, as well as the VFW.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick F. Kelly.
Kelly is survived by her daughters, Mary Ann Blake, Kathleen Dady, and Darlene Jakielski; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Interment was in St. John's Cemetery, in Woodhaven.
John J. Rich
John J. Rich, a Beach Channel High School student, died on November 11. He was 16.
Rich, who was born in Oceanside, lived in Broad Channel. He was a parishioner at St. Virgilius Church.
He is survived by his parents, Patricia O'Connor Rich and Gerard Rich; and his brothers, Jerry and Patrick Rich.
Visitation will be held at the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home on Friday, November 14, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday at St. Virgilius Church, at 9:45 a.m.
Susanna (nee Wengler) Simpson, a Breezy Point resident formerly of Glendale, passed away after a brief illness, on October 30. She was 92.
Simpson was the founder, past president, and active board member of the Glenridge Senior Citizen Multiservice and Advisory Center. She was also a former member of Planning Board 5, the St. Thomas More Golden Age Club, and the Rosary Society.
She was survived by many cousins, one stepson, and one step-grandson.
A mass was held at St. Thomas More Church, with interment in St. John's Cemetery, under the direction of the Morton FH/Ridgewood Chapels.
