Local Teen Dies On ‘A’ Tracks
A teenage Broad Channel resident was run over by a subway train at the Beach 98 Street station, early Tuesday morning, but police say they aren’t sure what happened.
Transit police responded to a 911 call just before 1 a.m. and found the body of 16-year-old John Rich pinned beneath a shuttle train. NYPD investigators were not sure how Rich wound up on the tracks, a police source said later on Tuesday.
Service on the subway line was suspended as the Emergency Services Unit removed Rich’s body from the tracks.
Rich, who was a student at Beach Channel High School, was involved in a 2002 clash between teens from Broad Channel and nearby towns. A 17-year-old Ozone Park resident stabbed Rich in the chest with a steak knife. Following that incident, his mother, Patricia Rich, said her son was lucky to have survived.
This week, the teenager’s family declined to comment.
