Meeks Honors Vets With Awards
Congressman Gregory Meeks distributed several awards of recognition to veterans last weekend in commemoration of Veterans’ Day on Tuesday, November 11, 2003. The awards, which were written on Congressional letterhead, were delivered to a number of service men and women in the Congressman’s district, representing various branches of the military. Congressman Meeks represents the Sixth District covering parts of Queens and Long Island.
Commenting in his letter to the recipients he remarked, "Each Veterans Day, our attempt to capture and pay tribute to what you, American service personnel, have done for our beloved country and the world are encapsulated in words such as courage, valor, honor, duty and phrases such as to secure and protect our freedom and placed themselves in harm’s way. All, of course, are appropriate, but even collectively they do not adequately express what happens to you, a young man or woman in uniform, in service, in battle, away from home. It does not speak to the lives interrupted and the anxieties, uncertainties, and upheaval that come with answering your country’s call. In my opinion, this says it best: sacrifice—every day, which is what you do and have done for us."
The Congressman’s remarks took on greater weight in light of the current dangers faced by military personnel on active duty in the Middle East.
