180 Hosts Asthma Workshop
Tuesday, October 22, marked MS180’s first workshop of the year. Felice Brenner, the Attendance Improvement Dropout Prevention facilitator, hosted an asthma clinic. SAFESPACE, the Jamaica Childhood Asthma Initiative of Jamaica Hospital provided an expert speaker, Ivanna Lopez.
Lopez discussed asthma in great detail as well as allergens. She also demonstrated various pieces of equipment, from asthma pumps to nebulizers. The control of dust mites, a major cause of allergy and asthma attacks, was also a topic.
Principal George Giberti spoke with the parents regarding the importance of good attendance especially among asthmatics and the workshop ended with pamphlets and dust mite proof pillowcases being given out to parents. SAFESPACE will provide services and materials free of charge to Rockaway residents with asthma.
