A small group of very spunky runners stepped up and helped STM capture Two CYO Team Sectional Championships in the Senior Boys and Bantam Boys divisions, and two team medal winning finishes in the Junior Boys (2nd) and Girls (3rd). The CYO divides the league into two six-team divisions. Joining St Thomas More in the Black division were: OLM/Holy Child Jesus, St Kevin’s, St Andrew’s, St Margaret/RA, and St Clement Pope. The top three finishers of each team comprise the scoring unit. The team with the lowest three person total will win the race. Team medals were awarded to the top three teams with 15 individual medals given in each race.
Kevin D’Emic started our day by winning the boy’s senior race, running 6:34 on 1.15-mile course. Kevin moves into 3rd place on the all time STM senior list. Shawn Egan moved up finishing 2nd (7:07 ) and Joe Drennen’s tough 10th place finish pulled out a 13-14 win over St Clement Pope.
Kara Egan broke the STM (.8 mile) Junior course record running 5:50. Louise Duffy (6:28), Brittany Dombrowski (6:46), Lauren Katen (7:25) and Becky McCarthy (9:02) completed this bronze medal winning third place team.
The Junior Boys finished second to St Andrew’s (14-19). Daniel Lee finished 2nd (5:25). Thomas McNoble (5:50 7th), Taylor Conlon (6:03 10th), Andrew Appel (6:11 11th), and Liam Anderson (7:07 17th) made up our junior boys team.
Our young Novice’s competed on the half-mile course. There were: Edward McCarthy (4:25), Robert Kiernan (4:34), Philip Carr (4:49), Christian Conlon (4:52), Julie Maloney (4:25), Caroline Kane (4:27), Mairead Gormley (4:49) and Elizabeth Lisk (5:40).
The Bantams run last each week. Only two bantam girl’s were available to run. Novice Kristin Corral (5:57 15th on the .7 mile course) stepped up to complete Christa Hedderson (5:11 11th) and Brianne Kelly’s (5:45 13th) team.
The bantam boy’s concluded a fine day by easily capturing the sectional title (STM 9 – Kevin’s 30). James Boyhan won the race (4:08) with the third fastest time in history of STM Track. Patrick Egan (4:25 3rd), Jack Kane (4:27 5th), Sean McNoble (4:33 7th), Richie Scannell (4:38 8th) and Patrick Cusack (5:13) 16th completed this gold medal winning team.
The St Thomas More Cross Country team had a solid day winning two individual gold medals, two-second place silver medals and 22 overall individual medals. St Thomas More looks to next Sunday’s Diocesan Championships with "High Hopes".
