Group Helps You Help Others For The Holidays

One local group is working to pair needy families with organizations, school classes, individuals, or families that are looking to help others through the holidays.

The Hamer-Campos Farmer’s Market and the God’s Battalion Loving Care Center Food Pantry (GBLCC), on Beach 66 and 67 Streets, have launched their "Adopt a Needy Family for the Holidays" program. The groups are looking for both needy families and those looking to contribute.

The program’s goal is to assist those in need in a more personal way than tossing some spare change in a collection bin.

"Sometimes people want to know where it’s going to go," said Mckinley Hightower, a coordinator at the GBLCC. Hightower said what he really wants to do is to match-up people and then let them decide how to proceed. Donors can share food, clothing, toys, tuition, whatever they like, he said. So, for example, if a teacher and his/her class wanted to "adopt" a family for the holidays, they could collect and donate the makings of a traditional feast.

Contact Hightower at 718-634-4909 or 718-634-7172 ext. 20 for more information.
