Fisheads Continue Playoff Push With Rugby Victory
Rockaway Rugby continued their surge to the top this past weekend with a thorough clubbing of archrivals Long Island Rugby. Following an impressive victory over long time foe Montauk, on October 4th, the Fisheads traveled to Eisenhower Park and came away with a 32-10 victory. The win was their third in a row and fourth out of five games this fall.
Tremendous forward play has been the difference this season as the Fisheads have no less than 12 quality players in the pack, led by the New Zealand warriors Nigel and Stratty, the Rockaway scrummies have become a well oiled machine, possessing both size and quickness; as well as veteran leadership and youthful aggressiveness.
The backline, which was once viewed as ancient, has also been revitalized with youth as Cpt. Jim "Kermit" Egan has been able to rely on neophyte wingers Paul Surferp, Danny Lunny, and local ladies man Tyrone Sperling to add speed and hustle to the squad. Sperling (a provincial surfing and hockey icon) has been an inspiration to timeless Fishead centers Oakie O’Connor and Wayno Fox, providing them with the crashing fullback that has been desperately needed.
This weekend, the Fisheads go out of state to take on North Jersey, with a shot at their first playoff appearance in 5 years. Rockaway Rugby will finish up their fall regular season with a home game at Ft. Tilden on October 25th against the Manhattan RFC. Gametime is 1 p.m. Please come down and support the Fisheads
Congrats to Stratty for being the 3rd Fishead to land himself in the Sinn Binn this season. Miraculously, John"the Grouch" McCann (no stranger to the referee society) has not done any time in the box thus far this season. 3 cheers to newly acquired Fisheads Patrick Benn, Tom Touhey, Kevin (bezerker) Walsh, Sean"kahki shorts" Callaghan, and Glenn BigHouse who have added depth and exuberance to the team.
Does anyone know what’s going on with Jack Bender and the Greybeards?..Jackaroo you are our #1 supporter and we’ve got room for you on the B side if your’re looking for a run. Big Bill Kelly gained a measure of revenge this weekend by beating Long Island and scoring a Try along the way; but after the match, he still would not reveal himself to Cowhead.
Rockaway Rugby would like to say thank you to Wave editor Elio for the fabulous job he does every week covering sports in Rockaway. Besides that, he makes an excellent frozen pizza. Please do not forget the Century club party and awards night dinner on sat Oct 25th after the home game with Manhattan rfc. All are welcome to attend. More info next week
Has anyone seen Kevin Stonybrook? Last spotted taking the night train to Long Beach for Irish Day. Happy 40th wedding anniversary Mom and Dad and thank you for a great trip to Disney!!! Your family loves you.
