Just returned from a whirlwind tour of San Diego where I also visited my son, Kevin, daughter-in-law, Julie, who celebrated a birthday , my pretty granddaughter, Samantha who turned 13 on Sept. 27th and my adorable youngest grandchild, Elizabeth Ann, one year old. It was a great joy to see them , as short a time as it was, and be with them while producing another "Travels in Style" television series covering the best hotels and restaurants in La Jolla, Del Mar, Coronado and Catalina Island.

At the Sea Lodge in La Jolla, a treasure of a hotel at affordable prices, situated on La Jolla beach, you can sit in their main dining room and watch the dolphins jump above the waves in the Pacific Ocean. La Jolla has so many good restaurants. The Embassy Suites Hotel in La Jolla is most convenient for business people.

They also provide a full American breakfast and a cocktail and munching hour at 5:30 each evening. At the newly renovated Del Mar Hilton Hotel right across from the Del Mar Race Track you can relax on your terrace overlooking the pool and patio.

The handsome leather upholstered sofas and chairs in front of the rich mahogany bar in their lounge off the lobby gives a warm welcome to any guest. You’ll meet the General Manager, Jim Jones in my "Travels in Style" TV show. That evening we dined at the famous La Jolla Marine Room whose charming award wining Executive Chef of the Marine Room, Beach and Tennis Club and Sea Lodge, Bernard Guillas prepared a tantalizing tasting menu for us that was out of this world: Crusted Alaskan Ivory King Salmon, Mandarin Fennel Pollen Emufsion, Sweet corn Risotto, Savory Herbs Diver Scallops and on and on.

Our hotel, the newly renovated Pavilion Lodge situated right on the waterfront within walking distance of the dock, offered very attractive rooms facing their garden patio and included continental breakfast.. We dined at one of the finest restaurants on the Island, Villa Portofino only few steps away. Executive Chef Gregory Wenger’s specialty is Seafood Lasagna with lobster, shrimp and crayfish in a heavenly sauce. When you see the dish on TV you will know what I mean. The Cave Canyon Tour the next morning was most interesting Dr. Thomas Smart was walking through the fields with an injured masked Bald Eagle (our National American bird ,which is almost extinct) training her to mingle with children for educational purposes.

At lunch, at the Airport in the Sky. I ordered a Buffalo Burger and found it very good.

Back in San we did check into the National Landmark Hotel, the Del Coronado where I lavishly lounged for two nights in a beautiful Jr .Suite in the old, main Victorian building. It faced their magnificent beach and ocean and the sound of crashing waves lulled me to sleep each night. (Many Rockawayites are familiar with that sound.) The "Del", as many affectionately call it, has a long and intriguing history. In the early days only the very wealthy could afford this hotel and came as far as New York, (7 days by train right up to the front door) with their children, nannies and servants.. All has been changed since the construction of the Coronado Bridge. Numerous renovations, the most recent 55 million restoration still maintains the finest woods of old with the opulence and elegance of the structures, as well as the modernization of fixtures and plumbing. They have enhanced the gardens and oceanfront and enlarged and beautified the Sheerwater, ocean front restaurant. Also the elegant Prince of Wales restaurant where you can dine el fresco or enclosed accompanied by nightly Jazz musicians still retains the reputation of being the best and most romantic hotel restaurant in San Diego. The "Del" is a National Treasure and will always remain so.. Jim Chladek (my ever present Director/ Cameraman, who is not only a cameraman but channel owner and manager, and President of Metro Access TV studio in New York) and I dined with my daughter-in-law, Julie and my two granddaughters, Samantha, and little Elizabeth Ann (1 yr) at the Crown Room for their much acclaimed Sunday Brunch where you find everything and anything you desire to eat at many food stations around the room. It was a delightful time……….As I mentioned the "Del" has a great history and in the "Travels in Style" TV show you will hear the Director of History, Christine Donavan relate some of the stories, especially about the Del Coronado ghost, Kate Morgan who appears in one of the rooms from time to time.. Christine is the author of " Kate Morgan, the Ghost at the Del" and another book about the History of the Del Coronado.

A must for new visitors of San Diego is the Trolley Tour which takes you all around San Diego and Coronado. You will find it most informative and from there you can map out what you will like to see. The Harbor cruise is also a must since San Diego is a Naval and Military town and you get a great view of the city from the water. At the famous San Diego Zoo, the big attraction is the brand new baby Panda on loan from China. You will witness the birth in the television show. Beautiful Balboa Park is known for its many Museums and outdoor concerts and the Global Theatre where Shakespeare and other classic plays are performed.

It was a fully packed and very memorable trip of which I will always treasure. San Diego will always be one of my favorite destinations to visit. Take a trip out there and see for yourself.

Marilyn and Peter Maloney will celebrate their 50th Anniversary on Oct. 25 at the Silver Gull given by their children. Found an unattached bachelor , Ron Greaney in Kennedy’s celebrating his birthday with family and friends from Breezy Point. But, they come from all over… Mary and Davis shared their 35th Anniversary at brunch with family and friends …Tom, Mary Beth Burke, David Gillen from Queens, New Jersey, Conn and Westchester. Sandra and Howard Gaffney are proud of their new grandchild Baby Page born during the blackout by son, Scott and daughter-in-law, Phil.
