October is a great month—lots of sunshine, pleasant breezes and moderate temperatures. It is also a good month if you are planning to head to warmer climes, the temperature change won’t be as jolting as it would be in February and you won’t have to drag your winter coat and boots on the plane!

BCVFD is sponsoring the Halloween Parade on Saturday, October 25 at 1 p.m. It will step off from the 17th Road park and finish at the field.  Sunday, October 26 is the rain date.

BCVFD is also hosting a Halloween Party on Friday, October 31 at Grassy’s at 9 p.m.

A two-session Defensive Driving Course, sponsored by St. Virgilius P.A. will be held on Tuesday, October 14 and Thursday, October 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. Cost for the entire course is $55, payable by October 10. Completing the course will give you 10% off your auto insurance for 3 years or up to 4 points off of your license. The 6-hour course will be held in the school lunchroom. Refreshments will be served. "Italy: From the Spiritual to the Flamboyant," is coming to the Library on Monday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m. A husband and wife team will give this presentation using music, commentary and beautiful slides of historical sites and attractions in Italy.

Tickets Are Available: BCVFD will be holding the Daily Raffle the entire month of November. Based on TV’s Daily Number, ticket numbers run from 000 to 999. Chances are $5 each and are good for the whole month. Match your ticket number to the NYS Evening Daily Pick 3 (straight only). Matching numbers Monday to Friday wins a $25 prize while Saturday and Sunday matches win $50. Call Ginger

Kiddie Bingo for ages 5 and up will be held on Sunday, October 19 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Christ Presbyterian Church Hall. There will be games, prizes, refreshments and raffles at this St. Virgilius P.A. sponsored event. Admission is $6 per person. For tickets call Jo 718 474-8207 or Mary 718 634-5804.

BCAC Football Game Schedule:  On Saturday, October 11 the Midgets will play North Babylon at 6 p.m. and at 8 p.m. the Ponies will play Levittown. On Sunday, October 12 the Pee Wees will play West Babylon at 11 a.m. The games will take place at the Memorial Field at 1 Road and Cross Bay Blvd.

The VFW Hall will hold a brunch on Sunday, October 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Cost is $6.

The Annual Craft Fair at Christ Church will be held on Saturday, November 15 starting at 10 a.m. Crafts, Christmas gifts, ornaments and other hand made items will be available.

Tickets for the $10,000 Giveaway Drawing are available now. The purchase of each $100 ticket entitles the owner to two places at the cocktail party at North Channel Yacht Club on Sunday, November 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. when the winning tickets will be drawn. There will be 17 chances to win cash prizes in addition to the grand prize. It will be Preschool Storytime at the Library starting on October 22 and
taking place every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and ending on December 3. With stories, songs and crafts, this weekly event lasts 20 to 30 minutes and is designed for ages 2 ½ and up. If your child is 18 to 36 months, larger libraries have a T.L.C. Program. T.L.C. stands for Toddler Learning Center and is a five-session workshop with age-appropriate games, puzzles and toys. Child development specialists will be available to talk to the parents (or babysitters) about the hard

Calling For New Volunteers: BCVFD is having a membership drive. The three divisions that are looking for new members are: Auxiliary department members can be any age. Junior department members are 11 to 17 and Senior members are 17 and up. Many benefits come with membership: CPR training, EMT training, eligibility for college grants and more. Artists from the Channel and other places will be exhibiting their works in ArtSplash 2003, a multi-media event which includes performance art such as playing an instrument and dance. Exhibits can be seen from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday until October 26 in Fort Tilden’s Studio 6 and 7.

An Email From A UCO Board Member: "A reminder from the UCO Board to submit your Sewer Maintenance Release. Releases received prior to October 6 are being processed currently.  All others will be handled after year-end.  If you do not have a Release, you can obtain one from any UCO Board Member."

The flags that hung from the utility poles in our town had to be taken down to protect them before Hurricane Isabel blew into town. The flags will be hung again next year. Did you see the Bake Sale last weekend? It was in front of the firehouse instead of St. Virgilius Church. The sun was shining on the firehouse side of the street, so it was a lot warmer there. During these October days, it’s always nicer to be on the sunny side of the street.
