Senior Appreciation Day Held
Assemblyman Audrey I. Pheffer and Councilman James Sanders were pleased to sponsor Senior Awareness Day in Rockaway as part of Senator Malcolm Smith’s Senior Appreciation Week.
Senior centers and groups throughout the Peninsula, including JASA Brookdale, JASA Roy Reuther, Young Israel of Wavecrest and Bayswater, Rockaway Park Senior Center, Hammels Center, JASA Rockaway Park and Breezy Point Golden Age Club, were all participating sites for the days’ events.
Panels of experts from the Department of Consumer Affairs, the Queens District Attorney’s Office, the Attorney General, the Federal Trade Commission, Housing Preservation and Development, the Department for the Aging, and the 100 and 101 Precincts visited the sites to discuss the need for consumer awareness, crime prevention and identity theft protection, along with a myriad of other issues affecting seniors daily.
"Educating and informing senior citizens is vital to ensuring that they not fall victim to unscrupulous practices by merchants, telemarketers or anyone they do business with," stated Assemblywoman Pheffer.
"We hope to make these wonderful forums a yearly event and expand on the sites and speakers available to the senior citizens of Rockaway," concluded Council Member Sanders.
