Memorial Scholarship Awarded

In response to the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Bishop Kearney’s lay faculty and their union established a $1000 scholarship in honor of Captain Walter Hynes, Captain Timothy Stackpole and Firefighter John Henry, relatives of the Kearney community.

This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman whose life was personally affected by the event, as described in an essay.

Mary Cullen, daughter of Lieutenant and Mrs. John Cullen in Bay Ridge, received the award this year. Mary’s father is a New York City firefighter and a reservist in the United States Coast Guard on active duty.

In her essay Mary remembered September 11 and the fear she felt listening to all the messages on her answering machine. In the days that followed, she and her family supported her Dad, as he buried his friends and tried to help their families.

"I love and appreciate my father very much," Mary wrote, "And will never take him for granted. I hope to learn how to achieve peace in the world during my four years at Kearney."
