Accepted To Academy
Midshipman Brian J. Kelly, the son of Elaine and Brian Kelly, residents of Belle Harbor, participated earlier this month in Acceptance Day ceremonies in the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point.
The colorful annual event marks the official "acceptance" of the freshman, or plebe, class into the ranks of the Academy’s Regiment of Midshipmen.
A graduate of Archbishop Molloy High School, Midshipman Kelly, with some 295 other plebes, was administered the Academy oath by Captain William Schubert, U.S. Maritime Administrator. The members of the Class of 2007 were additionally sworn into the U.S. Naval Reserve by Captain Frances Yates, USNR.
Midshipman Kelly was nominated to attend the Academy by Anthony Weiner.
The plebe class reported to the Academy on July 11 for a two-week indoctrination program. Since then the Class of 2007 has been involved in academic and regimental education and training.
The Academy is operated by the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
