Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices
The Sheet Metal Workers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, Local 137, will open recruitment on October 6 for twenty sheet metal worker/sign hanger/rigger apprentices.
Applications will be available from 8 a.m. to noon, every Monday, excluding holidays at the local, 21-42 44 Drive in Long Island City.
The committee requires that applicants be at least 18 years old, have a high school or general equivalency diploma, be willing to travel to shop or job sites within the local’s jurisdiction – the five boroughs of New York City and Nassau and Suffolk Counties, have a valid driver’s license, and sign a trade-specific affidavit attesting to their physical ability to do the work.
Applicants must bring their driver’s license and high school diploma or GED with them at the time of application.
Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, natural origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
