For a game that was circled on Far Rockaway’s calendar as very important for many reasons, the Seahorses lacked a sense of urgency as they plodded through the first half against John Adams. After halftime, however the combination of QB Chris Howard and WR Leon Grant helped Far Rockaway finally wake up in time to beat Adams 24-0.

The game was very important due to Adams knocking the Seahorses out of the playoffs last year with a 34-26 win. The first series set the tone for the Seahorses’ mistake prone first half when QB Chris Howard fumbled on the Adams 20 yard line. With big wins against Lafayette and New Dorp to start the season, it seemed as if the Seahorses were taking the Spartans lightly.

The Seahorses scored when James Romain made a great leaping intercepted from a pass by QB Jeremy Ducos to make the score 6-0. But turnovers and mental errors kept the game close at halftime at only 8-0. Far Rockaway knew that the game was only close because of their mistakes.

"We let it get to our heads that we was blowing out teams", said Far Rockaway QB Christ Howard. "We weren’t focused coming into the games and we knew we came into the mindset that they beat us last year and we wanted redemption".

A halftime adjustment on the offense made the Seahorses put the ball in the air and they capitalized. Senior WR Leon Grant made the play of the game when he caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Howard early in the third quarter to make it 14-0. Grant transferred from August Martin to get the opportunity to win a championship after losing seasons while playing with Martin.

"I’m running and I see the cornerback bite off the pump fake and I was gone", said Grant, whose teammates refer to him as WR Marvin Harrison of the Indianapolis Colts for his play.

The combination struck again with 8:45 in the fourth quarter as Grant caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Howard to put away the game.

"It’s an extra boost to our wide receiving corps", said Howard. "We got good receivers like James, Shiloh (Brown) to catch the ball and we worked him into our system."

With everything clicking in the second half, the Seahorses looked like a team who could compete for a championship. There are no dominant teams this year in the PSAL with power teams in the past few years such as Curtis and Wagner having a rebuilding year.

Howard knows that this year’s team has to play hard throughout the entire game. The Seahorses will try to keep winning today, September 26 with a home game against Midwood "I give all my respect to the offensive line, we got key seniors and our defense is real stingy this year. As long as we stay focused, there is nobody who could beat us in the city".

Beach Channel Wins

Beach Channel won their second game of the year with a strong 30-6 home victory over Dewitt Clinton. Beach Channel improved their overall record to 2-1 and Clinton fell to 1-2. Luis Santana threw two touchdowns; Stanley Laureano and Jamal Thomas both caught and ran for a touchdown as Beach Channel scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to seal the game against Clinton. Beach Channel will play at home at 3 p.m. today, September 26 against Campus Magnet.

Seahorses JV Wins

The Far Rockaway Junior Varsity Seahorses won their first game of the season with a 42-6 thrashing of the Lehman Lions. The home debut featured rushing yards galore as Tyrell Zanders and Daniel Samuels ran for more than 100 yards in the game. Far Rockaway ran for a total of 515 yards on the ground in the entire game. They will play their next game on the road against Clinton on September 29.
