NYPD Plucks Injured Man From Ship
A police helicopter was needed to rescue a stabbed stowaway with a self-inflicted wound from a ship off the coast of Rockaway this weekend. In a desperate attempt to reach U.S. soil, Alain Mungansa, a twenty-seven year old Congolese man, stabbed himself in the leg after being discovered by the ship’s crew. After being stripped and locked in a room by the ship’s crew Mungansa stabbed himself with a sharpened screwdriver, nearly hitting a major artery.
Crewmembers alerted the Coast Guard but were told there were no helicopters available in the area. The NYPD Aviation unit then assembled a rescue team to send to the 727-foot vessel near the Ambrose Lighthouse.
Braving 50-mph winds in the remnants of Hurricane Isabel, the helicopter’s crew plucked the stowaway from the ship and brought him to a Staten Island hospital.
