Catherine T. Gibson
Ret. Met Life Secretary

Catherine T. Gibson, who has family in the Rockaways, passed away on September 12.

Gibson, who lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia, was born in Brooklyn. She was a retired MetLife insurance secretary.

Gibson was preceded in death by a brother, George Gibson, and two sisters, Charlotte Hanratty and Josephine Walsh. She is survived by a brother, William M. Gibson, a sister, Margaret O'Leary and a niece, Susan Ross. Many nieces and nephews also survived her.

Visitation was held at the Denis S. O'Connor funeral home. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Raymond Jarvis
Rights Advocate, Samaritan

Raymond Jarvis, a longtime member of the Rockaway community, passed away on May 9.

Jarvis was born in Jamaica, Queens in 1939. He joined the Catholic church, where he was active until his death. Jarvis also spent two years in the army, and owned a travel agency and a photography business. He was affiliated with The American Friends of Service, Pima Council on Aging, Abolition For the Death Penalty, Buffalo Soldiers 9th & 10th Calvary, Amnesty International, African American Town Hall, Tucson Black Chamber of Commerce, Docent for the Arizona Historical Society, AARP Legislative Committee and was a Golden Heritage Life Member of the NAACP.

Jarvis was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Helena May Thompson, aka Maisie. She passed away on December 2, 2002. Her funeral arrangements were entrusted to Downes and Wilson Funeral Home, Barbados, W.I.

Jarvis is survived by his wife of 33 years, Natica, his mother Violet Aimey, of Tucson, son Carlton, of Lynchburg, Virginia, daughter Diana, of Brooklyn, three grandchildren, and other family and friends.

Services were held at Grace Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Interment at Southlawn Cemetery.

Alice Lombardi
Homemaker

Alice Lombardi, who lived in Rockaway Beach for 75 years, passed away on September 13. She was 82.

Lombardi was born in Manchester, New Hampshire. She first came to Rockaway as a child, with her parents, Samuel and Mary (nee Freeman) Golden.

Lombardi, a homemaker, was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima church.

Her husband, Alfred Lombardi, preceded her in death in July of 1985. She is survived by a daughter, Carole Moyse (Larry), of Rockaway Beach, sons Michael Lombardi (Shelley), of Norman, Oklahoma, and Daniel Lombardi (Joann), of Maspeth. Seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and a sister, Ruth Olsen, of Lynbrook, also survive her.

A funeral mass was held at St. Rose of Lima followed by cremation at Fresh Pond Crematory. Funeral arrangements were entrusted with the Meserole Funeral Home.

Juan Ocasio, Jr.
Security Officer

Juan Ocasio, Jr., a lifelong Rockaway resident, passed away on September 16.

Ocasio, who was born in Puerto Rico, worked as a security officer. He was an active member of the 101 Precinct Auxiliary. He was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima church.

Ocasio was survived by his wife Joann Ocasio; mother Awilda Ocasio; daughter Demise Franqui; sisters Ana Brands, Elizabeth Ortiz, and Angie and Luann Ocasio; and brothers Juan Ocasio, Angel Reyes, and Francisco and Victor Torres.

Visitation will be held at the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home on Friday, September 19, 2-10 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima.

David Stroman, Sr.
Army Veteran

David Stroman, Sr., a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, passed away on September 5. He was 70.

Stroman was born in Queens, and was and served in the army.

He was preceded in death by his parents Isaiah and Vashti Stroman, and his wife, Carolyn.

Stroman is survived by his children, Carol Alice Stroman-Boyd, David Scott Stroman, Jr. and Robin L. Stroman; grandchildren Brett Anthony Boyd, Keesha Veronica Boyd and Tahisha Hall; great grandchild Kevon Hall; sister-in-law Elinor Stroman; son-in-laws Bonnie Boyd and Kenneth Dinham; and a other family and friends.

Funeral services entrusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with a service at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Disposition was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Annie Bell Wilson
Factory Worker

Annie Bell Wilson, a longtime Rockaway resident, passed away on September 7. She was 87.

Wilson, who was born in Calhoun, South Carolina, was a factory worker.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert. She is survived by her son, Rodger; daughter-in-law, Veronica; grandchildren Laura, Scott, Mark, Odessa, Andrew, Tiffany and Glen; great grandchildren Corine and Keri; brother -Elder and Mrs. George Jenkins; aunts Corine Darby Addison and Ienether Paulin; and others.

Funeral arrangements entrusted with Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home with a mass at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Interment was at Forrest Park Cemetery.
