RAA’s ArtSplash On Tap, September 20
"Cutting edge art at the edge of the sea" is coming to Rockaway. From Delta blues to digital art, Rockaway Artists Alliance present ARTSPLASH 2003, a month-long multimedia arts festival, which will run from September 20 to October 26 at the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) at Fort Tilden, Gateway National Recreation Area.
A juried roster of more than 50 visual artists with work in varied media that includes a separate exhibition of digital artists from around the nation, DIGITALSPLASH 2003.
Performing artists that include Celtic hip-hop band Seanchai and the Unity Squad, contemporary dancers, belly dancers, singers, jazz, blues, fusion and Renaissance musicians, poets. The wine and cheese opening reception is Sunday, September 28 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., and will feature live entertainment. Performances continue the weekend of October 18 & 19, from 1-4 p.m.
Band night is October 11 from 7 p.m to midnight, featuring Seanchai and the Unity Squad. Outdoor stage/ indoors if inclement weather. Free admission to exhibitions and all daytime events. Band night - donation of $5 requested. Gallery hours: Saturdays 12 noon - 5 p.m. and Sundays 1 - 4 p.m.
ARTSPLASH 2003 is presented by RAA in partnership with the National Park Service/Gateway National Recreation Area. The winner will be selected from all juried visual, performing and literary artists participating in ARTSPLASH and DIGITALSPLASH.
The show features 12-foot high sculptures, bas reliefs, seascapes, Dadaist-influenced collage, tapestry-like paintings filled with mythological symbolism, paintings whose ancestry can be traced to the myths and murals of Mexico, installation art exploring family relationships both beautiful and foreboding, multiple-image photographic montages exploring the experience of Time, colored pencil, watercolor, papier mache, sepia toned silver gelatin photographs, mobiles, video art.
The juror of visual art for ARTSPLASH 2003 is Tom Finkelpearl, Executive Director of the Queens Museum of Art. Jurors for DIGITALSPLASH are Deena des Rioux, New York computer artist; international venues, New York Times reviews; digital print invitational, Brooklyn Museum of Art and Marcia J. Rudy, Ph.D., Director of Public Programs and Special Events, New York Hall of Science.
Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA) is located in Fort Tilden/ GNRA, a seaside national urban park incorporating idyllic beaches, marshlands and bird and wildlife sanctuaries, where Manhattan is a constant backdrop.
