Fashion Highlights Senior Appreciation Week
Congressman Gregory Meeks and the Queens Community Cadet Corp hosted a fashion show during Senior Appreciation Week on September 14.
MC’ed by Lola Selby Martin (Global Americas Mrs. Women of 2003), the event took place in Far Rockaway High School’s auditorium. State Senator Malcolm Smith, Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer. Rep. Meeks, Lois Mayweather from State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer’s office, and Margaret Denson from Councilman Leroy Comrie’s office were among those who modeled daywear, casual wear and evening wear from the Avenue clothing store.
During the show, Rep. Meeks announced that he and other elected representatives as will be bringing together some pharmaceutical companies so that seniors can get more affordable drugs.
"Look out for the announcement sometime in early October [about bringing] the programs to you to know how to enroll and how to get cheaper prescription drugs," Meeks told the audience.
Congressman Meeks also introduced Marine Staff Sergeant Adrian Bishop, of the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines, who just returned from duty in Iraq on September 10.
"Whether you’re for or against the war, we all are for the troops," said Meeks. "We owe them a debt a gratitude and we have to take the time to thank them for what they do."
The show ended with all those who took part singing the senior national anthem to the tune of God Bless America.
