From The Artists Studio
ARTSPLASH 2003 and DIGITALSPLASH 2003 begin this weekend on Saturday, September 20. The opening reception is Sunday, September 28 from 1-4 PM. These exhibits will bring diverse art from around the United States to Rockaway. One of the most colorful artists is from right here in Far Rockaway. Ludmila Bokov is a fashion designer and quilter. Her work is beautiful and striking. I will allow this imaginative artist to tell her own story.
"My name is Ludmila. I was born in Russia to the family of a secretary and an electrician. I started to express myself when I was six years old by creating fantasy clothes for my doll.
"In public school I have learned patternmaking and tailoring. This ability came in handy to my family, friends and myself because in the Soviet Union in my time things were not easily available.
"I immigrated to the United States in 1975 with my artist-husband and my baby son. I worked as a librarian at Columbia University for several years and dreamed that some day I would be ready to study fashion design on the college level. In 1985 I entered Costume/Textile Study of New York University and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 1988.
"Now, I work free-lance as a costume curator, image consultant and fashion designer. I maintain a sizable collection of international haute couture, which I lend to art institutions and show at private events.
"MY ARTISTIC CREDO: I believe that an artist is just a channel for divine sparkle known to us as talent. Talent to me is not only a great gift from the Lord but also His assignment to me to enlighten and improve human souls through art. Art makes people better, brings them joy and comfort, even inspires them for heroic deeds. My realm is textile arts and personal adornments. Since the early 90’s I passionately plunged into quilting. In patchwork technique, I can do anything: bed blankets, wall hangings, garments, bags, hats and jewelry."
