On Saturday, September 6, the Rockaway East Merchant’s Association (REMA) gave back to the Far Rockaway community as it ventured on a grand endeavor: "1st Annual Fall Fashion Show and Open Market".

Providing discounted products and services as well as entertainment was the goal for REMA. Working in collaboration with NYPD’s Anti-Graffiti program, Beach 20 Street captured a crowd of unprecedented numbers. The event took place on Beach 20th Street, at the public space next to 10-59 Beach 20 Street.

Local residents were pleased with the various products provided by the merchants that occupied tables. The pre-paid tables surrounding a beautifully constructed catwalk for the fashion show, displayed various products and services from food to bridal wear to banking and legal services.

Tony Berkel, Director of Business and Professional Services at RDRC said, "The revitalization of this traditionally neglected commercial corridor is the key towards economic development for the immediate area. This successful event is evidence that Far Rockaway is coming back in a
big way".

Many smiles were apparent and community service agencies such as the police, sanitation, fire, and transportation ensured that the public walkway was adequately prepared to accommodate the crowd of shoppers. Far Rockaway consumers were not only enjoying quality products at affordable prices but also free entertainment, said REMA President, Raphael Diaz.
