Celebrates Ninetieth Birthday!

Celebrates Ninetieth Birthday!

A Rockaway resident for almost fifty years, Catherine "Kitty" O’Neill was born in Ireland on September 4, 1913. She immigrated to New York City when she was only 16 years old.

O’Neill is proud of the fact that she got a job on the day she arrived in the United States as a salesperson in a large New York department store, and later worked in Schraft’s Restaurants.

She met and married Denis O’Neill in 1933 and worked side by side with him in their restaurant/bar (now called Moran’s) until they retired. After spending every summer at the beach, the family finally moved to Beach 88 Street in 1958. Since the death of her husband in 1976, she has lived with her daughter on Beach 92 Street.

O’Neill is the youngest of five girls and four boys, and is the last surviving member of her family. A celebration of her ninetieth birthday was celebrated on Saturday, September 6, at the Harbor Light Restaurant on Newport Avenue and 130 Street in Belle Harbor.

Approximately twenty-five nieces and nephews and their spouses, her son Bill and daughter Peggy Leonard, seven of her eight grandchildren and their families, and four of her seven great grandchildren were in attendance.

Bernie Heron, proprietor of the Harbor Light Restaurant, catered the meal and was responsible for making the party a very memorable event for O’Neill and all the guests.
