Bayfield Avenue Renaming Will Honor Firefighter

Bayfield Avenue Renaming Will Honor Firefighter

Councilman James Sanders Jr. and the family of the late firefighter Stephen P. Russell, will host a ceremony renaming Bayfield Avenue from Beach 65 Street to Beach 72 Street "F.F. Stephen P. Russell Memorial Drive." It will be held on Saturday, September 20, at 11 a.m. at the corner of Bayfield Avenue and Beach 69 Street in Arverne.

The public is invited to attend this ceremony. Among the invited guests is Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

Sanders states that he is proud to honor this true hero who perished in the cowardly attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 while trying to save the lives of others. "Firefighter Russell was a resident of Rockaway from the time that he was 18 months old. His heroism and the streets named in his honor will guarantee that his sacrifice will be remembered by Rockaway residents for many ages to come."

Firefighter Russell was a member of Engine Company 55 in Little Italy. This engine company was one of the first responding units at the World Trade Center disaster. His efforts to save lives in the North Tower of the World Trade Center will be acknowledged by this tribute.

Invited guests include noted dignitaries and elected officials at the city, state, and federal levels as well as representation from the New York City Fire Department.
