IN MEMORIUM

"Skies, after"

Azures, violets, cathedrals white

Alizarin crimson feet

Cyans so deep

They stop the heart

Or make it skip the beat.

Of what are they, these chilling skies

Of what are they composed?

What makes them bleed

With beauty rare

And cry as God-exposed?

The ash of souls, the breath of friends

The flesh of neighbors gone

Have risen to prismatic heights

To filter every tone.

How can we look and not perceive

What heav’n and hell appears?

And so we gaze at gorgeous death

And spill ecstatic tears.

2001.
