DOH Spraying Sunday

DOH Spraying Sunday

Weather permitting, the New York City Department of Health (DOH) will conduct a ground spraying of the Rockaway peninsula, from the Nassau County line west to the Cross Bay Bridge on Sunday, September 7, from 7:30 p.m. until 6 a.m.

The spraying is necessary as part of an attempt to eradicate all traces of the West Nile Virus from Rockaway.

The DOH admitted at a community meeting two weeks ago that a number of dead crows carrying the virus have been found on the peninsula.

State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regulations keep all spraying activities away from either Jamaica Bay or the Atlantic Ocean on environmental grounds.

Despite numerous attempts on the part of the city to get a permit to spray nearby Dubos Point, a noted mosquito-breeding site, the DEC has repeatedly turned down the city’s requests. In past years, the DEC has fined the city large amounts of money for attempting to clean that site of breeding areas.
