FDNY Wins In St. Francis Summer Classic Final

By Keith Goldberg

The final week began with the makeup of games from August 5th. FDNY-The Brooklyn League led off against Breezy Point Lumber. FDNY went out to a 10-8 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Christy Morrone then heated up with 21 points in the middle two periods and FDNY coasted 64-40. Anna Buzzetta added 14 and Corrine Howley 10. Natalia Alexander led BP Lumber with 18. The second game pitted Georges Florist against Rockaway Sunset Diner. The Diner started with four players and added timer James Goldberg in hopes of a fifth player showing up.

Instead, one of the four, Maureen Marzano, went down with an injury and the game ended as a scrimmage. The teams matched up again the following night in the semi-finals but the Diner could not muster five able bodies, so Georges advanced to the final. FDNY faced Breezy Point Lumber for the second time in as many nights and once again emerged victorious, 73-60. Christy Morrone poured in 30, Anna Buzzetta 11 and Kristina Triglia 10. Natalia Alexander had 15 and Juanita Whyms 13 for Breezy Point Lumber.

The championship on Thursday attracted a large crowd to the St. Francis Gym. FDNY sprinted out to a 10-2 lead behind Morrone, but Georges Florist countered as Jennifer Lawler and Molly Tubridy helped knot the score at 10. Tubridy had fire in her eyes, demanding the ball and aggressively attacking the basket. Unfortunately that aggression led to two early fouls and she would continue to be plagued with foul trouble throughout the contest. Morrone was on fire for FDNY in the second quarter, scoring 18 points, including 4 3’s in the period. Georges got the deficit under 10 but FDNY scored the last six points of the half to take a 41-27 lead. Georges fought valiantly in the second half but could never cut the lead enough to threaten FDNY.

Christy Morrone finished with 35 and Kristina Triglia 10 as FDNY-The Brooklyn League won the championship 68-57. Molly Tubridy scored 19, Jennifer Lawler 14 and Megan Tubridy 10 for coach Annie Egan’s Georges Florist squad. Clare Droesch and Janelle McManus coached the FDNY the champions are: Christy Morrone, Janene Jackson, Kaitlyn O’Neill, Kristina Triglia, Corrine Howley, Anna Buzzetta, Parker Griffin, Melisa Ritchie, Barbara Rudloff, and Katie Hall. Congratulations.
