Community Board 14 will use the majority if its time at its next meeting to address and approve a number of local street renamings that will take place over the next few months.
The meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, September 9 at 7:45 p.m. at the American Legion Hall (301 Beach 92 Street in Rockaway Beach), will take up at public hearings the following street renamings:
Beach 93 Street, from Holland Avenue to Shore Front Parkway to be named "Captain Walter G. Hynes Way," in honor of the FDNY captain who died on September 11, 2001.
Beach 118 Street, from Rockaway Beach Boulevard to the Boardwalk, to be named "Chief John Moran Way," after the FDNY chief who died on September 11, 2001.
Beach 40 Street, from Beach Channel Drive to Jamaica Bay, to be named "Clara Hinds Street." Hinds, who worked at the World Trade Center, was an active member of St. Gertrude’s Church in that vicinity.
Amstel Boulevard, from Beach 71 Street to Beach 75 Street to be named "Mario P. Russo Boulevard, in honor of "Mr. Rockaway," who served Arverne and the community board for more than 30 years.
Beach 37 Street, from Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Beach Channel Drive to be named "Firefighter Eugene Whelan Street in memory of the firefighter, who died on September 11, 2001.
In addition, the budget committee will give a report and there will be a public speaking session.
