Smith Announces Senior Appreciation Events

Seniors will be treated to health fairs, a fashion show, seminars and entertainment as part of Senior Appreciation Week, next month.

The week of September 13-19 is a time when communities can celebrate senior citizens and their contribution to our neighborhoods, Senator Malcolm Smith said.

Different events announced by Smith could draw a total of between five and ten thousand seniors. On Sunday, September 14, Congressman Gregory Meeks will host a large health fair at Far Rockaway High School from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All are welcome. Meeks, New york State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, State Senator Ada L. Smith, Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer and City Councilman James Sanders joined Smith in sponsoring the events.

Smith has also introduced a legislative resolution calling for Governor Pataki to officially declare the September week Senior Appreciation Week.

On September 13, Smith will kick things off with a luncheon, noon to 3 p.m. at Thomasina’s Restaurant in St. Albans.

"During the week, my colleagues and I are encouraging neighbors to look out for seniors by reading a book to them, assisting them with grocery shopping, visiting a homebound senior, organizing a school visit to a senior center, and entertaining a senior with music, dance or dramatic performance," Smith said.
