Stationed Off Liberian Coast
Navy Seaman Michael Blackman, son of Wendy J. and Colin Blackman of Far Rockaway, is currently on station off the coast of the West African nation of Liberia.
Blackman is one of more than 4,000 Atlantic Fleet Sailors and Marines currently deployed aboard the ships of the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group.
Marines and Sailors aboard Blackman’s ship were recently inserted into the capital city of Monrovia at the Roberts International Airport as well as the Freeport of Monrovia, Liberia to provide support to West African forces.
Blackman’s ship is an amphibious assault ship whose primary mission is to embark, deploy, and land elements of a Marine landing force by helicopter, landing craft, or amphibious assault vehicle.
Blackman joined the Navy in September 2001.
