Girls Battle At St. Francis Summer Classic

The calendar has flipped to August, which means it’s time for the Girls High School division. Once again four teams will battle it out this month in the St. Francis gym.

Play began on Monday with Georges Florist taking on FDNY-The Brooklyn League. Georges came out strong early, and looked headed for a comfortable victory. Molly Tubridy, Maryann Welsh and Jennifer Lawler were firing on all cylinders.

But FDNY rallied behind Kristina Triglia and Parker Griffin. When Welsh fouled out, FDNY gained even more momentum, grabbed the lead, and then held on to win 42-41. Triglia led with 20 and Griffin had 12. Welsh and Lawler tallied 10 each and Tubridy 9 for Georges.

The second game followed and at halftime was deadlocked at 21. Annamarie Ciorciari changed that, and with some timely assistance from Catherine Rudden, Breezy Point Lumber pulled away from Rockaway Sunset Diner, 50-43. Ciorciari poured in 22, while Jean Clyde led the Diner with 11. Tuesday’s games were rescheduled to August 25 to allow for some playoff games to move inside due to the rain.

Play resumed Thursday and Georges once again ran out to an early lead. This time they made sure to close it out, as they out-gunned Breezy Point Lumber 64-52.

Maryann Welsh scored 25 and Molly Tubridy 14 for Georges, which featured an all-cousins lineup on several occasions. Jenifer Angelara had 16 in defeat for BP Lumber.

In stark contrast, points were hard to come by in the nightcap. It was 33-20 after three quarters before FDNY woke up and unleashed a fourth quarter barrage with 22 points. However Rockaway Sunset Diner countered with 19 themselves, which was more than enough to hold off FDNY, 52-42.

Katie Pastina scored 18 on a variety of inside and outside shots. Parker Griffin had 18, including 13 in the 4th quarter, for FDNY.

After one week, each team is 1-1. Games are at 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in the St. Francis De Sales gym on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The St. Francis Summer Classic Playoffs are on Tuesday, August 26 with the championship game on Thursday August 28.
