Volunteers Make The World Go ‘Round

Volunteers Make The World Go ‘Round

As we move towards the beginning of fall and a new school year, it is once again time to reflect on Rockaway and the role that volunteers play in making our community a great one. There are the obvious places to look for proof that volunteers make our world go ‘round. There are the four local volunteer fire departments – Broad Channel, Rockaway Point, Breezy Point and Roxbury; the volunteer ambulance corps such as Hatzolah and The Rock; the auxiliary police officers who serve both of Rockaway’s precincts as well as those citizens, both civilians and off-duty first responders, who put themselves in jeopardy each year making rescues on the beach and in the event of fires. There are less obvious volunteers that improve our quality of life that we do not often think of as such. They are the people who run the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce, the Rockaway Music and Arts Council, the Rockaway Artists Alliance, the Rockaway Theatre Company, the local civic associations that abound in Rockaway, environmental groups such as the American Littoral Society and all the others too numerous to mention in this spot. As we move into a new season, The Wave wants to recognize and celebrate their contributions to Rockaway. We could not do without you.
