Rugby Fisheads Enter Jersey Shore Tournament To Defend Title By Alan Shaw

This Saturday, the Rockaway Fisheads Rugby Club will travel to Seagirt, New Jersey to compete in the Jersey Shore Invitational Tournament. The host, Monmouth Rugby Football Club will set up fields in Fort Sea Girt, N.J. and organize 30 rugby clubs during this all day competition.

Since Rockaway’s domination last year’s in the over 35 division, other teams have been "stacking" their sides, to challenge the Rockaway "young" old boys team. Most notable, OMEX Old Boys, a team several Rockaway players have played on and have been known to fly in all-stars from around the globe. Many of Rockaway players have hit the 35 years mark while some have retired and have been waiting for this milestone to re-enter the rugby world.

But for the most part, playing rugby, without fear of being slammed by a 21 year old, has been the incentive for the brittle seniors to get back in the game. It’s like old timers day, only nobody will "let up". Expect hard hits, heavy falls and 2nd retirements after this day is over.

Some of those fossils include, Bob Johnson, George Johnson, Oakie O’Connor, Wayne Fox. Phil Tufano, Robbie Ostrander, Jason Fox from Cleveland Fire Dept., Ooch Boyland, Tim, Joe & Bill Kelly, "Cowhead" Siebert, Jim "Sunshine" Mullen, Tush Coyne, Steve Benjamin, Sgt. Keith Serper, Lenny Nichtern, Jerry Hunt and Mike the Russian-American. Tom Mullen, Kazoo Tippy Mickey Marti

Artie Fitzpatrick will choose a team to play for once he arrives at the field. Kevin Barrett’s wife will not allow him to go and will hang out with Duke Fody. Rob "OMEX" Mrotzek still needs to shed 30 pounds before he arrives to camp. Ghetto McMorrow is still MIA. Andy Israel is BBQing and can’t make the trip.

The young boys, will also compete in the Club Division. Tyrone Sperling has secured Tap & Grill as a tournament sponsor for Rockaway Rugby. He and Tom Leonard will manage the team. T.J. Mahoney, Cupcake Curly, Kevin Lynch, John McCann, Kermit Egan, Adam Lynch, Matt "Head" Frank, Ben Ross & butt buddy Chris Cinagri, Finkelrick, Mike "the Man Child", Stony Brook Kevin, Omar, Gerard Andre and new guy, The Wave intern Tommy H.

Rugger pluggers:

John McCann has been disqualified from the over 35 team. It has been learned that Mr. McCann was advanced early at St. Francis de Sales due to a clerical errors and is only 34 years old.

It is rumored that Mike Gergerty’s playing strategy will be to play "balls out" for 15 mins., leave on a blood sub, smoke a cigarette or dip and re-enter at the final 5 mins. "Tush" Coyne will hold his cig and spittoon ‘til the half.

The Ostrander’s jacuzzi as been condemned (after the 7’s bath) and donated to the Rugby Club.

Oakie O’Connor has been cited in the journalism world for his contribution to his local paper, the Wave. He has been asked to write his rugby autobiography for his readers. Due out is September.

Congratulations to John & Kris McCann on the birth of their son, John "Jack" McCann VI. Jamesy & Stacey Tubridy are due to give birth again early next year. The D.J. Empire is looking good. "Kazoo" & Beth Mona on the birth of their baby girl.

Wedding bells for Mike "Barney" & Katie Egan rang loud (500 people loud) during the B130th wedding block party. Best wishes and happiness from the Rugby Club.

The rugby float is now available for St. Pat’s day, Mardi Gras and now weddings!

There is only a 32 seat bus for Sat. so if you do not contact Bob, ASAP you will be driving yourself during the victory party.
