184 Swimmers In Annual Killian Race

184 Swimmers In Annual Killian Race By Jim Mulligan

On Sat. Aug. 2, 184 swimmers entered the water off Riis Park for what was shaping up to be a very competitive race. While the sky was overcast with some clouds and a few scattered raindrops, the conditions for a good race seemed to be in place.

As the cannon blast started the race, it quickly became apparent that Mother Nature and King Neptune had their own plans for the conditions the swimmers would have to compete in.

As the swimmers rounded the first buoy, they disappeared into a fog as thick as pea soup. While this caused concern among family and friends on shore, it also created confusion among the swimmers who could not see the shoreline or the buoys, which served as markers and turning points. Chris Gahn, one of a few pre-race favorites, missed the turn at the half-mile mark and took himself out of the race. Tommy O’Neill and Melanie Andoffer made that turn and went on to place first overall and the first female (fourth overall). Many swimmers became disoriented and reported that they were swimming in circles or felt that they were heading out to sea. One experienced swimmer whose name we will withhold, so as not to embarrass him (his first name is Gary), became so disoriented that he was forced to follow his 13 year old daughter, who on her first ocean mile swim, led her father out of the thick fog he became stuck in. With all the problems due to the fog, it was still a very successful swim with 184 swimmers entering the water and 184 finishing. The little friendly competition between brothers, friends, mothers and daughters, fathers and daughters and sisters like the Killian girls, who swam in the race that honors their father and his memory, is what makes this swim so special and a day to remember.

Like always, we would like to thank Eileen and her girls, Sarah, Bridget, and Trish for letting us share in a day that will hopefully bring fond memories for years to come of how respected and loved their father was to so many people. We are grateful to them for letting us be part of this special day.
