Beach 127 Street Block Party

With the summer season comes the celebration of an annual Rock away tradition: The Block Party! How often do Rockawayites dread the invitations of "mainlanders" to attend summer functions off the peninsula? Why leave Rockaway to maneuver the traffic on the Belt Parkway or to sit by a pool in someone’s yard. In many ways, even The Hampton’s pale in comparison to what we are so lucky to have here. The Block Party is a great depiction of what life is like in Rockaway. It’s an occasion when neighbors who reside on a particular block close off their block and celebrate with other neighbors and families. A day when neighbors and lots of children could be seen romping from one lawn to another and in and out of each other’s homes, sharing Barbecue, and a toast to a unique way of life that still exists in the shadow of a cold and often indifferent city. The Beach 127th Street Block Party (see photos by Teresa Baxter) depicts our special way of life. With a theme of Red, White, and Blue, and prize for best decorated house, the day’s festivities began with bagels and coffee at the Gardner’s home. There was Face Painting at the Donegan’s, a Jumping Castle, a Kids Balloon Toss, and an Egg Toss for children and adults. Then, from 6-11pm, DJ Mark rocked the block. There were Hula Hoop, Freeze Dance, and Mummy contests; a 50/50, and prizes and favors for all the winners and kids.

At the Baxter home, an extraordinary house with a unique history that really lends itself to entertaining, there were the hosts, Teresa and John, their daughters Carolyn Baxter and Doreen Baxter-Mullarney (Brenda now resides in Colorado and Mary now lives abroad in Switzerland!). There were Doreen’s three beautiful children: Alison, Kieran, and Erin; Teresa’s brother and sister-in-law John and Mary Cole; and their son Tommy and his three children: Emily, Steven, and Scott. Also in attendance was Owen Baxter, Anne McKeon, Tom and Kathleen Sharkey, Bridie McCotter, Molly Faherty and her children: James, his son Seamus, Patrick, who was with a very stunning young lady named Kathleen, and Mary Ellen with her son Martin.

It was great to see neighbors like Kathleen and Christy O’Connell, the McVeighs, the Roche family, Sally McGonigle, the Shanaghans, Mary Supple, the Ratners, Farrells, and McCluskeys, etc......! A wonderful time was had by all!

See you...On the Beach!
