Nike Seeks King of Court
Streetballers who have won regional competitions in Toronto, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York and Chicago have the opportunity of a lifetime to catapult themselves into the national spotlight during Nike’s Battlegrounds 2003 national streetball challenge. Each man has run the gauntlet through an elite group of 32 local hand selected ballers to advance to the national finals. Each champion had $5,000 donated to the charity of his choice by NikeGO, received $10,000, a one-year NIKE contract and had a billboard featuring his likeness erected in his region.
Next for the ballers is the finals in New York, an opportunity to be crowned "King of Kings" and have an additional $5,000 donated to the charity, receive the $25,000 grand prize and enjoy a lifetime of "street cred."
The first two events on July 25 and 26 saw 32 finalists battle each other one on one. William "Junie" Sanders became the New York City Battleground champion and now faces off against winners fron Toronto, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Chicago. NYC 2002 champion Mike Campbell will also compete
To be crowned "King of Kings", the ballers will need to out-play the best of the rest in a uniquely designed half-court cage complete with flaming cauldrons shooting fire eight feet into the night air after each made basket. The event takes place at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan on Saturday, August 9 at 7 p.m with Ludacris – performing live on stage and DJ Clue – spinning all night.
