Grant for Cleanup

Grant for Cleanup

The Environmental Protection Agency has announced the assignment of a 1.15 million dollar grant aimed at the assessment and cleaning of "brownfields", the EPA term for property that could be used for some sort of productive endeavor, but is contaminated with hazardous substance, and is therefore useless, not to mention potentially dangerous.

"Brownfields are not only an eyesore in our communities, they are also properties that could be put to better use and on our tax rolls. Rehabilitating these parcels will be of great benefit to the city." Commented State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (D-Queens). According to the EPA, the first phase of the program will assess the fields then the next phase will attempt cleanup. Some of this is slated to be used on the superfund sites in Rockaway. No news on when the process will begin.
