A bad incident, blown up in the N.Y. Times and other media, has brought embarrassment to the residents of Breezy Point Cooperative. Since all the facts are not yet in I will not discuss the details, except to mention weekend guests of a Cooperative member and one of the shareholders had a confrontation in the Sugar Bowl that blew up out of proportions erupting in physical and verbal abuse. This conduct is inexcusable in a private community that professes its residents are law abiding citizens, compassionate and kind to those in need and less fortunate. It is a black eye to the community that will be long in healing resulting in endless reprisals. This is an issue that should be seriously addressed. It is one thing to pretend to be good and loving. It is another thing to live that way. We all come up against rude and thoughtless people, especially children from time to time. Take a few deep breaths and be patient. It can get to you, but whatever they do is usually not earth shattering. We are all human beings and make mistakes. The most important thing is to learn by them. Whoever the guilty party may be, this incident is an example that human behavior toward one another, regardless of race or creed, is in need of much improvement. By your deeds you will be known.

It was another delightful ride on the Ferry this week where I met some very nice people: Mike Burns and wife, Ann Marie Brennan and daughter, Ceara Maria Burns who summer in Breezy Point and winter in Manhattan, as do Emily Anduise and Chad Katoff from Belle Harbor. We all agreed how wonderful it was that the N.Y. Waterway Ferry is available to us on Saturday and Sunday from East 34 St and South Street Seaport to Riis Landing at 9AM with return trips on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. back to Manhattan.

Fifty people celebrated Msgr. Connelly’s 69 birthday on July 24 at Kennedy’s. After all, the well-loved Msgr. Connelly has been with St. Thomas More 22 years and next year should be a big blast for his 70th.

Kennedy’s gets all the important parties. On Sunday, there was Maryellen Barnes surrounded by her daughters who were showering daughter Virginia Barnes Siegist on the expected birth of her third child on Aug. 15. Daughter, Coleen will marry Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. at St. Thomas More. Hope it doesn’t conflict with her new TV Show for Discovery Health Channel, "Buff Bride". Beautiful daughter-in-law, Debbie Joyce, married to first son, Shamus Barnes, recently delivered a beautiful red headed daughter, Abigail. JoJo, married to handsome firefighter, Peter Conlon, proudly showed off her happy baby, Blaze. Her sister-in-law, Josephine Serafin was there with her lovely teenage daughter, Rachael. Also present was Kim McKee, the Irish Step dance teacher and last but not least, the family matriarch, Joellen Blaire Flangan. All are looking forward to Maryellen’s Teen Show at the Colony Theatre Aug 12-15. Be sure to make one of the shows. Maybe next year there will be a new theater for them in which to perform. Let’s hope so.

I was shocked to hear from Jimmy Doyle, B.P.S.C. member, that his son, who is serving in Iraq, had his pay cut from $1850 to $1100 after the Iraq War was declared over. With all the soldiers we have been losing in Iraq since that time how can they cut their pay? These soldiers are in just as much danger, if not more, now as they were before the war was over. Protests to the proper authorities should be made to reestablish their combat pay. Any suggestions??? Hadn’t seen the group from B.P.S.C. since last year and they all look great! Pat Doyle, Jimmy’s wife, Eddy Stockpole, coach of the New York City Fire Department team for 35 years, Peggy Walsh. With the Hughes’ (Claire and John) were Carol, married to son Billy Hughes, Valerie and daughter, Lauren who is Register Advisor at the University of Scranton and daughter-in-law, Sheryle Hughes whose friend, Paul Sielert keeps up with happenings in Rockaway in The WAVE on the computer. However, he complained, he now has to pay to get The WAVE on line. They will solve that, they said, by giving him a subscription. Good idea!

It caused deep sadness to hear of the passing on July 19 of Beatrice Kearney, better known as "Mrs. K" from the Hardware Store. She knew just where to find what you wanted. After 33 years employed there was little she didn’t know. You looked forward to her cheery smile and sweet helpful ways. A well loved and respected member of the Cooperative who will be sorely missed. Mrs. K is survived by four sons, Author, Rusty, Timothy, Tommy and Kerry and six grandchildren. Her husband, James left this world in 1996 on July 19. He was a veteran of WW II.

Also well loved and known throughout the Rockaways was Kenny Howe who passed way two weeks ago from kidney failure in Saratoga. He was a retired Hotel Manager in Saratoga, New York.
