Chatting with Chapey
by Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey, Democratic District Leader
Honored By Caffrey Learning Center
At the annual Caffrey Conroy Learning Center reception, I was pleased, as the Director of Trinity Services to receive a plaque for my work with the Center. It is an honor and a privilege to work with the Caffrey Conroy Learning Center to help the children and seniors to achieve their academic goals.
The Caffrey Conroy Learning Center was initiated by Robert Kane. Robert Kane is a distinguished attorney who resides in Breezy Point. As an attorney, he heads a law firm that engages in research as a part of the litigation process. He recognizes the value and importance of library skills.
Bob Kane raised a beautiful family with eight children. As his children grew up and raised their families he observed first hand how difficult it was for working parents to get their children to the library. Bob Kane’s excellent academic background led him to appreciate the value of access to academic resources. Bob Kane is an intelligent, capable and decisive man of action. He immediately began to develop the idea of creating a learning center in Breezy Point.
The Caffrey Conroy Learning Center is a comprehensive learning program designed to fulfill the needs of youngsters and seniors. It offers many programs which are of interest and value to the community.
The leader of the Learning Center is a vivacious, energetic and effervescent woman-Elizabeth Hendry. Her enthusiasm is contagious. Betsy (as everyone calls her) is devoted to helping people of all ages to meet their goals. Betsy is a people oriented individual. She has a fantastic sense of humor. It is a pleasure to work with such a talented and capable woman.
The program at the Caffrey Conroy Learning Center consists of academic intervention, homework assistance, computer instruction, knitting, chess, art for special children, art for adults, defensive driving classes, computer access time, reading for grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and mathematics for grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 as well as tutoring. One particularly interesting offering is tot time where three to five year olds are taught to use the computer. These children will grow up with excellent computer skills. They will consider it second nature to utilize the computer for school work and recreation. Veronica (Ronnie) Mc Carthy teaches this class. Ronnie is a very capable and well organized instructor. Ronnie makes the lessons fun and interesting. Ronnie generates such enthusiasm from the children. The children look forward to their classes. They run into the Learning Center eager to see what Ronnie has in store for the day.
Kudos to Betsy Hendry for a fantastic job-extremely well executed. It is reassuring to know that we have such a competent and professional woman working for our children and in fact for our community.
