Stella Maris Completes Another Successful Camp
From July 7th thru July 11th Stella Maris High School hosted its Lady Flipper Basketball Camp. The Camp, in its 6th year, has grown in leaps and bounds. Its inaugural year (1998), 25 campers attended while the staff numbered 13. Each year, the numbers have increased. This year, SM opened its doors and welcomed 86 eager, dedicated, young athletes. The camp staff of 38 was, once again, duly impressed with the campers’ skill level, desire for improvement and overall enthusiasm throughout the week.
Throughout the week, each day is geared to a general skill area: shooting, defense, ball handling, passing; moving without the ball and post play. An hour a day is spent on "station" work where specific drills are demonstrated and each camper has an opportunity to perform the drill. Then the players participate in 2 league games where they incorporate their new and/or improved skill into a team concept.
In addition, guest lectures are delivered, daily camp contests are held, individual shooting instruction is available and each Camp day ends with the now famous "Ride the Wave". (Congratulations to Lauren Atwood: this year’s sole RTW winner!). The entire Camp also enjoys Papa’s Pizza Thursday. This year Papa’s courteous and most accommodating staff successfully worked around a "rain day" and delivered 25 piping-hot pizza pies (in shifts) to ensure that all campers enjoyed a delicious meal! Then on Friday a tired staff enjoyed rainbow ices also supplied by Papa’s Pizza (serving cups and scooper included!).
Besides being a week filled with fun, hard work and enthusiastic players SM’s camp has also become an Alumnae reunion of sorts. This year, 40 campers had Alumnus ties of some form. Most are daughters of alum but SM also welcomes nieces, cousins and granddaughters (not to mention 2 sons). The Camp culminated with Championship Friday and the Camper Acknowledgment Ceremony.
