Church Of Christ Health Fair Set For July 26 in Far Rockaway
In today’s climate of emerging foreign diseases, a person’s state of wellness is priceless. More important than wealth, power, or romance, is good health and when it is gone, no amount of money can recover it.
With that in mind, Cornelius Heyward, Minister of the Far Rockaway Church of Christ, has involved his congregation in their First Annual Community Health Fair, scheduled for Saturday, July 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The free event will take place in the parking lot, directly across the street from the church building, located at 21-25 Nameoke Avenue in Far Rockaway. The health fair is being co-sponsored by Senator Malcolm A. Smith and Health Plus.
Brother Heyward is excited about the opportunity to provide the community with what he believes will be a valuable health related public service. "Unfortunately, some of us take our health for granted, as if it is something we did not have to think about, or work at continuously," noted Heyward. "Many screenings and tests that will be available at the health fair may very well be the first time some individuals are screened for such diseases as hypertension and diabetes, that are so common and prevalent in communities of color. I am convinced that screenings can result in early detection, and early detection can result in successful treatment, with a positive outcome," concludes Heyward.
"The health fair should prove to be a fun way for residents to learn more about their own health and the care that is available to them through Health Plus," stated Senator Smith. He further noted that events such as these, are not only informative, they are critical to the well being of the community.
Some participating organizations include: Queens Hospital Center, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, New York Medical and Diagnostic Center, New York City Department of Health, New York City Fire Department, Long Island Benefits Check Up, and American Lung Association.
There will be entertainment for the children, who must be accompanied by adults to participate. Free refreshments will be available. The public is invited to this outdoor event. The rain date for the health fair is Saturday, August 9.
