Fundraiser Will Benefit Special Athletes By Joe Featherston

The Rockaway Beach Special Athletes Club, which is centered at the St. Camillus Gymnasium, is a registered training site with the New York State Special Olympics. It offers sports training and athletic competition for all children and adults with cognitive disabilities.

The St. Camillus training site currently provides weekly training in physical fitness, basketball, soccer, softball, football, track and board games to forty athletes. Over forty volunteers provide coaching. The weekly program allows these special athletes to develop fitness, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of friendship with other Special Athletes and the community.

In addition, the program sponsors a weekend ski trip to the Adaptive Sports Foundation at Windham Mountain, a basketball competition trip to Fordham University, and a track and field competition trip to St. John’s University. The athletes compete as the St. Camillus Special Olympics Team at the two universities.

All of the above activities are free of charge to the athletes and their families. The training site is entirely staffed by volunteers and the program fully depends on the generosity of the community for all its activities.

On Saturday, July 26, 2003, there will be a fundraiser for this special population at the Mullen residence at Beach 134 Street from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Your support for these athletes would be greatly appreciate.
