Angels With Rockaway Flavor Shine On Court

Angels With Rockaway Flavor Shine On Court

The Queens Angels, a Rockaway based AAU, 14-year-old girls, basketball team, supported by many locals including the Rockaway Graybeards, have excelled in tournaments in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Many local high school stars play on this team with representatives from Molloy, Kearney, and Stella Maris.

The team had the opportunity to travel to Burlington Vermont to complete its schedule by participating in the Vermont Summer Spectacular with over 125 of the best teams from the Northeast. However funding had run low. Which is when the Graybeards stepped in and sponsored the team for their final trip of the year.

The Angels were able to overcome many obstacles to get to Vermont to compete in the tournament. Funding was taken care of by the Graybeards, but that proved to not be the only obstacle. The Angels were only able to field 7 players and had to recruit their old coach to come out of retirement due to summer vacations. The 8-hour drive also hit the Angels hard as it took them a long time to stretch their legs out and get into their running game. But the toughest obstacle proved to be playing up at the 15 year old level where both 15 and 16 year-old players compete.

Having said all that the Angels were extremely competitive and were in every game right to the end. They lost their opener to the toughest team in the 15-year-old division, the Bay St. Magic. They found their mark in the second game winning by over 20 points as the team hit a combined 7 three-pointers. The second two games were well played games with losses by 10 and 4 points. All told the Angels were 1-3, but they were in every game and played as hard as they could. They also represented Rockaway very well, as they demonstrated that they could not only play up a level, short-handed no less, but were also good sportswomen. Thanks to the parents who made the trip and rooted so hard for the team, Charles Brady who has kept this team going for the last 5 years and organized the trip and thanks to that fabulous organization the Graybeards, who proved that they could even help Angels!!
