Deacon Cleveland Collins
US Army Veteran

Deacon Cleveland Collins, a Rockaway resident for more than 30 years, passed away on June 30. He was 78.

Collins was born in Crawfordsville, Ga. He worked as a mechanic and served in the United States Army. He was Rockaway's Deacon at the Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

Collins was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Annie Collins.

He is survived by his wife, Deaconess Daisy Bell Collins; daughters Deborah Winston of Rockaway and Sandra Collins of N.C.; grandchildren Danielle, Sabrina and Cherice Winston, Christopher Griffith and Ashlee Galbreath; great grandchildren Lamel Robinson; brother Hershall; sister Olivia King; and son-in-law Lawrence Winston.

A funeral mass was held at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery. Supervised by Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home.

Helen Breen Crawford
Peninsula ER Staffworker

Helen Breen Crawford, a lifelong resident of Rockaway, died on July Fourth in Seminole, Fla.

Crawford was employed at the Peninsula Hospital Emergency Room for 20 years. In her youth she was a Majorette and an original member of the Irish American Band of Rockaway. Crawford attended Stella Maris High School.

She was the mother of six children: Denise and Joe O'Connell, Regina and Paul Kiernan, Andrew Crawford, Michael Crawford, John Crawford and James Crawford.

She was the grandmother of six grandchildren: Kerry and Denise O'Connell, Kevin and Janette Kiernan, and Christine and Michael Crawford.

Helen is survived by her siblings: Eugene and Cathy Breen, Patricia Jackson, Carolyn Breen, and James and Cathy Breen.

Memorial services will be held at St. Camillus Church on July 26, at 11 a.m.

John W. Dunbar "Love"
Worshipped Here Since 1930

John W. Dunbar, who worshipped at First Baptist Church in Far Rockaway since 1930, passed away on June 26. He was 85.

Dunbar, who was born in Dunbarton, S.C., worked as a bus and truck driver. He was also a past president of the CB Social Club of Inwood.

He was preceded in death by his wife Myrtle; brother Myron; sisters Marie Taylor and Effie Scott; and close family friend Margaret Johnson.

Dunbar is survived by a daughter Tracey; son Stephan, grandchild Cady, sister Josephine Martin and a few specially family kindred: Emma Collins, Helen Wells and Joyce Coleman and sister in law Eleanor Bailey.

There was a funeral mass held at the First Baptist Church. Interment was at Amityville Cemetery. Supervised by Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home.

Lois Gordon-McKoy Erskine
Nursing Aide

Lois Gordon-McKoy Erskine, who lived in Rockaway for more than a decade, passed away on June 26. She was 61.

Erskine was born in St. James, Jamaica, W.I. In recent years she lived in Rockaway, where most of her family also resides. She worked as a nurses aide and was a parishioner at the International City Mission Church of Far Rockaway.

She is survived by her husband Leroy; daughter Elaine Willocks; son Hubert Barrett (Joan); sisters Patricia Robinson, Emily Boothe, Lurline Reid and Christine Gordon; brothers Donald, Wilbert and Roy Gordon; grandchildren Anthony Cousle, Nicholas, Allison and Matthew Barrett, Tiera and Tyrice Lawes; and great grandchildren Diamond and Toni Cousley.

A funeral mass was held at the International City Mission Church. Interment at Gordon Cemetery, St. Ann, Jamaica, W.I. Supervised by Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home.

Kenneth G. Howe
Retired Hotel Sales Director

Kenneth G. Howe, a Rockaway resident born in Brooklyn, passed away on July 9. He was 72.

Howe worked as a sales director in the hotel industry and served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Howe was preceded in death by his parents Alfred J. and Alice (nee Kealy) Howe.

He is survived by a sister, Alice Weber; brothers Alfred, Arthur, Howe; also by many nieces and nephews.

Interment will be at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island.

George Lewis
Construction Worker

George Lewis, born in Ala., was a Rockaway resident of over 20 years. Lewis, who was employed as a construction worker, passed away on June 29 at the age of 71.

Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lizzie Lewis. He was survived by his wife, Ruth, his sons, John Henry and Coleman, his daughters Edna, Jeanette, Kathy and Anna Marie, and grandchildren Wendy and family, Yolanda and family, Kietha and family, Shelicia, Lashonda, Tranell and Rakim. Lewis was also survived by daughter-in-law Desire, son-in-law Lonnie and longtime friends John, Henry and John.

Interment at Frederick Douglass Cemetery in Staten Island. Funeral arrangements supervised by Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home.

Lawrence McNair

Lawrence McNair, a lifetime Belle Harbor resident, passed away on July 12.

McNair worked as a plumber, and was a veteran.

McNair was preceded in death by his father Lawrence McNair. He was survived by his wife Beth (Nee Levine) McNair, his mother Cookie McNair, sons Joshua and Justin, daughters Kristin and Rachel, and sisters Christine McCabe, Jeannie McNair, and brothers Michael McNair and Timothy McNair.

Funeral and interment arrangement are being kept private, and are entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor funeral home.

Lena Schnall
Neponsit Resident

Lena Schnall, a native of Italy, and six year resident of Neponsit, passed away July 14. Schnall was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Church.

Schnall was preceded in death by husband Jerome Schnall. Schnall is survived by daughters Estelle Balderas and Marie Fodera, and sons Ronald and Saul Schnall, and sisters Gloria Cecchi and Dora Cornish, along with 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Wilreta Taylor

Wilreta Taylor, a 10 year Rockaway resident, passed away June 28 at the age of 78.

Taylor, a native of Jamaica, worked as a homemaker.

Taylor was preceded in death by parents, Florence Harrison and Simon Taylor.

Taylor was survived by sons Charles, Hansel, and Maurice, and daughters, Nichola and Joanne. Along with daughters-in-law Esmie and Gloria, and sons-in-law Carl and Roland; 20 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, along with a host of loving friends.

A funeral mass was held at International City Mission Church in Far Rockaway, followed by burial at All Saints Cemetery in Great Neck. Supervised by Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home.

Mariann e Wiggins
Rockaway Resident

Marianne Wiggins, a Rockaway resident for over 30 years, passed away on June 25. Wiggins, a Brooklyn native, was 75 years old.

Wiggins was preceded in death by parents George and Hattie May Ferguson; husband Damion, sons Steve and Michael, grandsons Vaughn and Terrance Jones, and two sisters.

Wiggins is survived by companion and friend Charles Whitney, sons Albert and Anthony, daughters Nadine, Patricia and Marianne, brother, Grady Ferguson, daughters-in-law, Janice Wiggins, Frentre Jones and Ella Dunnings, sons-in-law Rudolph Jackson and Mark Brown, along with 19 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and a host of loving friends.

A funeral mass was held at Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Friendship Chapel, followed by interment at Forest Park Cemetery in Morganville, New Jersey. Supervised by Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home.

Franklin R. Jenkins

Franklin R. Jenkins, a Rockaway Resident, passed away on July fifth.

Jenkins worked for The City of New York for several years, Park Nursing Home for 8 years and the Lucille Rose Day Care Center for 20 years.

Jenkins is survived by wife Shirley M. Jenkins, daughters, Rosetta, Julie, Sondra, aszaleigh, Chiquita and Latrisha. Jenkins was also a prod grandfather to Tommie and Adedeji.

Funeral services were held at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Arverne, under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney's funeral home.
