Meeks Will Chair Golf Tournament

Meeks Will Chair Golf Tournament

On Monday, September 15, Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) will take to the green at its inaugural golf tournament. The Honorable Gregory Meeks, Democratic Congressman from New York’s Sixth District, will be the tournament’s honorary chairman.

Inwood Country Club in Inwood, New York will host the tournament. Participants will enjoy a challenging course, fun contests, and food. Proceeds will benefit RDRC’s Beacon Programs.

RDRC’s Beacon Program is one of 88 city-wide "Beacon" Programs first established in 1991 through New York City’s "Safe Street, Safe City" legislation as "safe havens" for community youths. Located at The Reverend Thomas Mason Community Center at Middle School 198 in Arverne, New York, The Beacon Program is a school-based community center funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).

The Beacon Program is designed to be the focal gathering point for community events, programs, and services for youths. Various groups and community service organizations are able to utilize space in Beacon Programs, resulting in the integration of services to the community.

As a multi-service program, RDRC’s Beacon Program reaches over 1,800 youths and adults by delivering recreational, educational, and social programs. The Beacon’s classes and programs are offered free of charge Monday thru Friday, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in ten-week cycles. Among the programs offered are homework assistance, arts and crafts, a summer day program, martial arts classes, aerobics instruction, math and reading tutoring, computer, GED, ESL, SAT training, dance/ step, drama classes, recreational sports, conflict resolution and mediation sessions, and individual/ group/ family counseling.

Many youth services have fallen victim to the numerous budget cut the City has endured. RDRC’s Beacon Program is no exception. RDRC hopes that businesses, residents, and community leaders will take this opportunity to come out and share in a fun-filled day while supporting Rockaway’s youth.

Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) is a not-for-profit local development corporation, which was organized in 1978 by community residents and business leaders to develop a comprehensive community development program for the Rockaways in response to serious problems, including deteriorating commercial areas, residential blight and substandard housing, and high rates of poverty, unemployment, and crime. The corporation’s overall mission is to promote the revitalization of the community’s economic base and neighborhoods, and assist its residents in obtaining an improved "quality of life."
