Log On To Assist BC Volies To Get A Firehouse
An increasing number of people use the Internet on a regular basis to help them with their daily lives. The shop on-line, get the medication on-line, do their banking on-line and even, sometimes, find the love of their life on-line.
Now, the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department (BCVFD) has become the first non-profit organization in the area to go on-line to raise funds for a new firehouse as well as for operating expenses.
"This seems to be a painless way for people to help us by helping themselves as well," says Ed O’Hare, the organization’s President. "The Website even sends you a form for your income tax at the end of the year showing how much you gave during the year."
O’Hare explains that Rockaway and Broad Channel residents can go to a Website called igive.com (www.igive.com/bcvfd) whenever they want to make a purchase on line, everything from toothpaste to electric appliances such as refrigerators.
"People can shop on-line at the 400 or 500 stores at the igive.com virtual mall," O’Hare explained. "The mall includes such stores as Land’s End, J.C. Penney, Barnes and Noble, Dell Computers, Adidas, Disney Store and many more."
After logging onto the site, those who want to assist the volies can indicate that a percentage of their purchase should go to the BCVFD.
The organization then receives anywhere from one percent to 26 percent of the purchase, depending on the store they purchase from.
There is no extra charge to the person who makes the purchase. The percentage is donated by the store and the Website.
"People are always asking how they can help us," O’Hare added. "Now, they can do that by shopping."
The volies remind users of the website that they must log into the site using the "/bcvfd" address.
