Just returned from a whirl-wind tour of Antigua-Barbuda where I taped another "Travels in Style" television show. This is the Island where you find more donkeys than people, where you feel so welcome because the natives love Americans and where there are more activities than you have time to fill. Swim with the dolphins or, as I did, hug and kiss the sting ray. You can hold star fish in your hand and observe the barracudas, watch the baby Frigate birds take their first flight on Barbuda, snorkel and swim in the clean, clear azure waters and spot a beautiful rainbow on a dry day. Our host hotel was the Jolly Beach Hotel where, I remember Kenny Obermuller used to vacation and raved about it. Jolly Beach has been renovated and up-scaled and it is one of the most active resorts on the Island. From water volley ball to sun fishing and loads of other water sports to dining in their five restaurants: breakfast, lunch and dinner in their main restaurant, Seafood restaurant noted for it’s lobster special, Greek that specializes in pumpkin soup and lamb kabobs to various pasta dishes in the Italian restaurant. Also from 12 noon to 10 p.m., there are hamburgers and hot dogs at the grill on the beach and by the pool. It is all-inclusive so you can drink and eat all day and all night. Live entertainment every night as well. Fun! Fun! Fun! At no extra charge. And, if you are looking to get hitched, it is a great spot for a wedding in their Gazebo by the pool and waterfall with a steel band and church bells or a more quiet spot in the Gazebo along the beach. They have a proficient minister and fantastic wedding organizer, Beverly King to make your day hassle free and most memorable, with every detail taken care of for you.
While in Antigua, we were flown over to Barbuda where I discovered the Cay Club and Coco Point. Coco Point was managed by Hale Ferguson, former owner, since deceased, of B.P.S.C, Silver Gull, Silver Point and another Long Beach Beach Club. He and Mr. Tom August and Mr. Thomas Mulligan managed this beautiful Coco Point, for a number of years. Our driver/guide, John Burton whose brother, Erik worked at Coco Point at the time inquired about the welfare of Mr. Mulligan and Mr. August. He sends them his best wishes. Though both resorts were closed at this time of year , you could tell they were very special properties, and I am sure, demand very special prices. It most certainly is a remote paradise and one where you may easily attain anonymity. You will be able to see the beauty of this Island in my TV show when editing is completed.
After a due overhaul at Janet’s Salon with Gary and Janet before my trip I walked over to the OTB Irish Circle to try their Friday FREE buffet. I was warmly greeted by bartender, Mike Stack who made delicious sea breezes for me. And, I am sure, whatever you order he makes sure is top notch. Ran into Carol McNelis who was helping Grace Miller celebrate her June 3 birthday. Then learned Ronnie and Joan Burns were so delighted to be grandparents of Andrew Ronald Burns , Jr., 7 lbs, born on May 31, to Roberta and son, Andrew Burns. Their best friend, Maureen Stack offered the info. Palmer and Orina Laurenzi are the other proud grandparents and parents of new mother, Roberta. Congratulations!
At Kennedy’s last week, I came across Eileen and Bill Lavin, former CEO of Woolworth’s and then Foot Locker, but has decided to go more local and became part owner of Brennan and Carr, originally and well known in Brooklyn, now in Rockville Center. If you are out in that area by all means stop in and have one of their famous Hot Roast Beef Sandwiches and enjoy!
Happy Birthday to Peter Danzilo, June 29 and to Patty Crowley on July 19. Congratulations to you both.
Don’t forget when you vote at the Breezy Coop meeting to place your ballot in affirmative for the renovation of the Colony Theatre. This is a must for our community and a much needed addition for the local shows as well as making movies available close to home.
Ellen and Lenny Wunder, always the hosts with the most, celebrated Ellen’s 79 (looking not a year older than 59) birthday entertaining Anita and Jack Wilkinson and Dot and Joe Farrell on Sunday, July 13. And, along with that Anita and Jack Wilkinson celebrated their daughter, Maureen McCabe’s birthday with hubby, Bill and their children, Kerry, Megan. Kevin and Brendan at Kennedy’s earlier in the day. Kennedy’s now features Irish Night every Wednesday with live music by Garogue - Jerry piper Band and Deacy and Casey and Emigrant Eyes starting at 9PM. Don’t miss it!
Frank McCarthy, spouse of Pat (Kane) McCarthy is not only a very active Board member, very community minded, but is doing great work with the Breezy Hoops. Watch these players as they wiz through a winning season.
Have you ever watched children as little as three and four surf? Well, every year, this year the sixth, Bobby Crowley and John McNamee organize the Kevin McNamee /Adrian Foley Breezy Point Memorial Surfing Camp. All instructors are volunteers and it is just a delight and quite an accomplishment for these little ones to get up on the boards and surf the ocean waters. A great job by all! See photo. This event is for Breezy Point residents only.
